Housing shortage during the touristic season in summer is one of the biggest challenges the Cycladic island of Amorgos is currently facing. While homeowners rather rent out their properties to short-term visitors and construction activity is focused on accommodating tourists, local inhabitants, seasonal and specialised workers struggle to find a place to live in the long term.
The film explores these issues in the form of a business-as-usual scenario to better understand the potential threats if the current trajectory continues. Current trends such as rising building costs, increasing number of tourists, or lacking political action are exacerbated into the future to establish a baseline against which proposals are evaluated. Amorgos [Re]habitat is an attempt to tackle the housing crisis through (re)using, (re)densifying, and (re)thinking potentials of the island. How can policies change, and new policies balance the housing market between locals and tourists?
Why can abandoned structures play a vital role in solving the housing problem? What does the vernacular architecture of Amorgos tell us about tackling ecological issues and how can it be made future-proof? Amorgos [Re]habitat thinks these questions through all spatial scales and explores how their answers could materialise in its main village, Chora.
