The concept of a ‘Parliament of Food’ aspires to expose the hidden global consequences of the Berliner diet. It provides a forum capable of challenging the city's role in the unequal distribution, environmental degradation and unsustainable production found within existing global food supply chains. Such challenges which are increasingly being confronted by major cities globally.
Providing a socio-political space for discussion re-introduces food related conflicts and inequalities into the consciousness of the Berlin-Brandenburg public and encourages active engagement from actors such as producers, politicians and consumers to find collective solutions. Brandenburg shows a disproportion between urban demand and regional supply. A dramatic restructuring of agricultural activity towards a regional supply network, could unlock self-sufficiency capabilities in the region and decrease its dependence on detrimental global networks. A parliament of food provides the setting to stimulate this transformation.
